Garda Commissioner Fachtna Murphy yesterday reiterated his commitment to the continued deployment of the necessary Garda resources to make Ireland's roads safer for all road users.
In his opening address yesterday to a Global Intelligence Forum conference in Co Waterford he spoke about the crash between Buncrana and Clonmany that claimed eight lives and entered the history books as the worst road accident in Ireland since records began.
Mr Murphy expressed his deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the bereaved and to the wider community of the peninsula. He also thanked the emergency services for their work at the tragic scene on Sunday night.

Meanwhile, Buncrana Mayor, Councillor Padraig MacLochlainn said Inishowen was in a state of shock at the enormity of the accident that happened at Glasmullen at 10.40pm on Sunday.
He said: “Once again the community here in Inishowen has been devastated by a road accident. This is truly one of Donegal’s darkest days.
“This tragedy is a stark reminder for all to pay heed to road safety programmes and the plethora of road safety advertisements and education programmes. There must be a change in culture in terms of road safety.”
Meanwhile, his Sinn Féin colleague, Donegal Mayor, Cllr Cora Harvey, expressed her condolences with all the families of the bereaved and injured.
“Words seem inadequate when trying to express the level of grief that this tragedy has visited on the family, friends and indeed the whole Inishowen community.
“I would also like to praise the work of the emergency services who attended the scene, Gardai, ambulance service, hospital staff, local doctors and clergy for their response to this dreadful accident.” For death notices, click here .
