Highland Radio takes issue with newspaper 31.07.07

MANAGEMENT at Highland Radio have taken issue with a newspaper for implying its high listenership figures are partly down to reception problems for RTE in Donegal.
In a letter to the Sunday Business Post, Highland Radio chief executive Charlie Collins responds to an article in the paper's edition of July 22nd, regarding the station's recent takeover by Denis O'Brien's Communicorp.
"(The article) implies that reception problems for RTE in Donegal are a key reason for Highland Radio's success in attracting a high listenership and market share," wrote Mr. Collins.
"This is totally inaccurate. If any transmission problems exist for RTE, would they not also exist for all other broadcasters in the area as well, including Highland Radio?" he asks.
The station's chief executive goes on to highlight that Highland also has competition in parts of its catchment area from BBC radio stations.
"Highland Radio has been the top-ranked local station in Ireland for the past 16 years, not because people can't hear other stations, including RTE, but because Highland provides them with the service they most want to hear."
