Gallaghers keep up with the
Joneses

The Gallagher Clan set
a new world record yesterday for the most amount of
people with the same surname gathered in one place.
Letterkenny Institute of Technology (LYIT) was the
setting yesterday for the mammoth challenge to beat
the current record holders - the Joneses of Wales -
into the Guinness Book of Records. |

The Gallaghers needed
1,224 people to take the title. But at 3.30pm
yesterday, the number stood at a worrying 1,051.
Registration continued unabated however, until a
late surge of Gallaghers brought the total gathered
at LYIT to a whopping 1,488 - 264 more than the
previous record.
They came from all over the world including
Australia, the US and Britain to meet the challenge.
Shaun Gallagher, a carpenter from Florida said he
was delighted to be part of the challenge.

Gallagher from Mayobridge, Co. Down arrived in
Letterkenny on Saturday night. "There was a really
good buzz about the place," said James.

Gallaghers, some Derry Gallaghers, Loughanure
Gallaghers and Gortahork Gallaghers, to name but a
few...Gallaghers.
The record attempt was overseen and validated by an
observer from the Guinness Book of Records.
Delighted event organiser, Adrian Gallagher, said
everything was done by the book. All participants
had to show a copy of his or her identification to
two independent witnesses before entering LYIT. The
only acceptable means of identification were birth
certificate, passport, National ID Cards (with photo
only) or a photo driver’s licence. For women who
were born Gallagher but who no longer use the name,
a birth certificate was required.
