PEOPLE in Inishowen
with derelict traditional properties they would like
to restore could get some useful tips at a seminar
in the county next month.
The Ulster Architectural Heritage Society is holding
a one-day conference entitled ‘How to Restore
Traditional Buildings'. |

The seminar will be
held on Friday, August 24, 2007 in Magheragallan and
on Gola Island and will introduce the owners of
traditional buildings, professionals and contractors
to the techniques used in the conservation and
restoration of old rural buildings. Guest speakers
will include Colm Murray, architecture officer with
The Heritage Council; Paul McMahon, Office |

of Public Works;
Gráinne Shaffrey, conservation architect; Ed Byrne,
Traditional Lime Company Ltd and Margaret Gallagher,
traditional building owner.
“We are delighted that the architects and owners of
a restored house on Gola Island have agreed to give
those attending the seminar a first-hand account of
their experience of working with traditional
buildings” said Rita Harkin, research officer with
the Ulster Architectural Heritage Society.
“We hope that the lessons learned from all our
speakers will lead to good practice being realised
in conservation and restoration schemes for
traditional buildings elsewhere.”
Places on the seminar are limited to 45 people and
priority will be given to owners of traditional
buildings from north and west Ulster. The cost is
€35 and includes refreshments, packed lunch, boat
trip and a copy of the ‘Traditional Buildings in
Ireland: Home Owners’ Handbook’ by the Mourne
Heritage Trust.
