Turf cutting green-light for Quigley's Point 24.10.08

TURF cutting on Magheradrummond bog in Inishowen can continue although no new areas can be opened, it's been confirmed.
Senator Cecilia Keaveney received the update on the special conservation area bog at a meeting this week with Environment Minister John Gormley.
She was informed that turf cutting for domestic purposes using the hopper or hand cutting methods could continue at the bog between Quigley's Point and Carn. However, a question mark still hangs over the machine-cutting method.
Many turf bank owners hire machine operators to harvest their turf more quickly and in larger quantities.
"The Minister gave an undertaking that he would take scientific advice on the sausage machine and its impact on the bog and return with a decision in relation to whether he will change current rules in relation to the use of that machine," said Senator Keaveney.
"This was an important meeting and there are points that Minister Gormley will return to us on but the face-to-face interaction cleared some issues and perhaps expanded on others." Senator Keaveney said she would keep in contact with the Minister on the issue.
