Recession drives quads from top 11.12.08

Nintendo Wii and DS Lite remain the hottest items in Inishowen

by Liam Porter, Inishowen Independent

IT WOULD appear as if the recession gripping the North-West may even have reached as far as the North Pole this year with less requests for large items like quads from boys and girls writing to Santa, according to the Inishowen Independent Christmas toy survey.
For the second year in a row Nintendo consoles and games are the most sought after items among boys and girls in Inishowen, but quads which made the top ten of most sought-after items for both boys and girls last year, don’t make it onto either top ten this year.
Instead, it is interesting to see that instead of diesel-powered vehicles like quads, pedal-power is very much in vogue with go-karts making a comeback into the top ten of most wanted for boys.
And bicycles remain high up on the wish list for both boys and girls, the third most sought after item for girls and the fourth for boys.
However top of the list for both are Nintendo items, the DS Lite and DS Lite games the most sought after item for girls and the Nintendo Wii top of the wanted list for boys.
Both items also appear on the boys’ and girls’ list, with the DS Lite the fifth most sought after item for girls and the Wii the tenth most popular for girls.
Another big surprise in the top ten for boys is the appearance of Ben 10
Nintendo DS Lite
items as the second most sought after item for boys. The animated television series has become a huge success with many boys wanting the Ben 10 watch.
Action heroes and figures are popular again among the young boys in the peninsula with wrestling toys and Power Rangers toys both in the top ten.
However they still come way behind a local favourite - tractors, with the John Deere remote controlled tractor a particular hot favourite among youngsters in Inishowen.
Sporting goods, including football jerseys, football nets and other equipment like footballs also make it into the top ten for boys this year having been far down the list last year.
Meanwhile High School Musical items remain hugely popular among young girls in Inishowen this year, coming no doubt on the back of the release a few months ago of the third movie in the series.
A new item in the top ten this year for girls is the Girl Gourmet Cupcake maker, appearing at number five on the wish list. Bratz, Hannah Montana and Dora items all also make it into the top ten for girls this year who once again appear to have more interest in music-related items and see ipods also make their top ten.
Musical items including guitars and drum kits are sought after by some of the youngsters in Inishowen but don’t make the top ten for either boys or girls while books and art materials are also sought after, especially among girls.
Train sets, lego and PSPs are sought by boys but not in huge numbers, while various dolls and doll-items like prams and houses remain popular among young girls.
Last year if you were to buy eight items out of the Top Ten toys for the boys it would come to an astonishing €1,729, while the entire top ten this year would come to around €1,249.
There is also a dramatic drop in the cost of the girls requests with eight of last year’s top ten coming to €1,136 while the entire top ten comes in this year at around €980.
