Harbour works continue in Inishowen  03.10.08

DONEGAL County Councillor Marian McDonald has welcomed the progression of harbour works at both Portaleen and Greencastle piers.
Marine engineers, Jason Doherty and Brian Cullen were expected at Portaleen pier this week to ensure that works are progressed further.
"I am glad to see that the Portaleen pier situation is moving as it has been lobbied by many who see a strong marine future there," said Cllr McDonald.
"I have also been encouraged by the interest in Inishowen in having Greencastle harbour works continued and my party colleague Senator Cecilia Keaveney is aware that for many, marine infrastructure is vital to the industry in Greencastle."

Cllr McDonald acknowledged the "serious difficulty" all users of Moville slip were experiencing. "The important health and safety issues must be addressed now that the money is in place," she said.
Senator Keaveney confirmed that the Minister was aware of the progress on the Greencastle
breakwater. "It is important to our local economy and is also a health and safety matter. The Minister indicated he was intent on ensuring that the progress continues in 2009 while also being aware that the budget will be a lot tighter next year."
She said it was important to recognise the employment in maritime and ancillary areas. "People try to talk down the entire fishing industry but the reality is that significant innovation and consumer-friendly practices are evolving and opportunities for added value remain untapped,” added Senator Keaveney.
