Ógra Fianna Fáil coming to Inishowen 10.06.08

Carol and Kevin take plunge into politics

TWO young people from Inishowen are taking the plunge into politics by establishing a youth branch of Fianna Fáil in the peninsula.
Ógra Fianna Fáil is being set up jointly by friends 23-year old Carol Faulkner from Quigley's Point and 21-year old Kevin Kelly from Clonmany.
Their keen interest in politics is part of the reason they decided to start up a youth branch of Fianna Fáil on their home turf and they’re hoping many more people aged between 16 and 26 will join them.
Carol Faulkner "Ógra Fianna Fáil is the largest and most active youth political movement in the country. I have a very strong interest in politics which led to the decision to set up Ógra in Inishowen," explained Carol, who works as Senator Cecilia Keaveney’s parliamentary assistant.
"Kevin, who is also heavily involved in politics at Dublin City University, got in touch with me and was also keen to get Ógra up and running. It has really gone from there. The idea has also been met with great enthusiasm by the senior
party members of the constituency," she said.
Kevin, who is a columnist with the Inishowen Independent, added: "I am already involved with Ógra through the Padraig Pearse Cumann in DCU where I am currently assistant chairperson. This has been an extremely positive experience for me as we have helped to improve student life on campus, which we also aim to do for the young people in Inishowen.
"Ógra will give young people the opportunity to meet likeminded individuals as well as enabling them to have their voice heard both by local councillors and Oireachtas members alike. Currently, many Government decisions are partly shaped by consultation with Ógra members."
Kevin and Carol say that being involved in Ógra gives young people a "unique opportunity to voice their fears and concerns on policy issues that directly affect them" as well as the chance to take part in a range of social activities.
They are holding two local information meetings this month to assess the level of interest from young people in Inishowen and to give a general outline of what Ógra is and what it aims to do.
The first meeting will take place in the Caiseal Mara Hotel, Moville, on Monday, June 16 at 7.30pm with the second in the Inishowen Gateway Hotel, Buncrana, on Monday, June 23 at 8.30pm.
