New Buncrana Historical Society 12.11.08

A NEW historical society has been set up in Buncrana. The Buncrana and District Historical and Heritage Society was formed following a meeting in the local library on October 30. A spokesperson said local people are keen to explore and nurture Buncrana's rich heritage, judging by the large attendance at the inaugural meeting chaired by Fahan-based Peter Gurrie. Guest speakers on the night were well known Inishowen historian Sean Beattie, Joe Gallagher of Donegal Heritage; Buncrana Town Mayor Cllr Dermot McLaughlin; veteran collector of old photos and historical memorabilia Thomas Doherty (Miller); Jimmy McBride of Inishowen Community Radio, who is an authority on old songs from Donegal and John McCarter of Fort Dunree Military Museum.

A steering committee comprising Peter Gurrie, Seamus Doherty, Marie McLaughlin and Columba Quigley volunteered to organise the next meeting of the new society. This will take place in the Library on Tuesday, November 25, 2008, at 7.30pm.
