Delays in Moville school construction 22.05.08

"Why is my old school still standing?" Keaveney asks

INISHOWEN Senator Cecilia Keaveney is seeking answers to why work has not yet started on a new school for Moville.
In February, the Moville-based public representative confirmed that her old primary school in the town centre would be demolished within days.
The old building on the grounds of Scoil Eoghain, which currently uses prefabs, was to be razed to the ground after the Minister for Education sanctioned the works.
Senator Cecilia Keaveney at her old primary school. But Senator Keaveney has now expressed her concern at the lack of work taking place in the grounds while the old building, formerly known as St. Bridget's, is still standing.
"It seems strange that a project that has had pre-fabs in situ for almost a full academic year now would appear to be no further forward. This is a concern in
terms of the message it sends back to the Department but is also a concern for parents, students and teachers alike who are in constant expectation of works not only beginning but also concluding," she said.
She said she recently raised the matter with the Government but as far as they were concerned, the Moville project had received the green light while the Education Department wanted to see it started.
Senator Keaveney, who is Seanad education spokesperson, said she would now write to the school's board of management for clarification.
"If we don't act now it puts back even further the project for our students and it also sends a message that we did not really want the project," she said.
"I do believe that there are many people eager for work to begin. While I will be sad to see my old school go, I know the new high-tech facility is very much needed," she added.
