KEVIN McGrath may be
better known for spinning the tracks at Liberty’s
Nightclub in Buncrana every weekend, but the Inch
islander is now seeking volunteer families to take
part in a radio programme to be broadcast on
Inishowen Community Radio (ICR) later this year.
McGrath wants to see how the music tastes of parents
and their children work in the home environment.
What music is being played? How often? And how
loudly? Do parents inform their children’s musical
choices?
The genesis for the idea came from his own family.
“My son Shane plays guitar, and as a Christmas
concert in Inch Hall last year followed a Girl’s
Aloud song with one by Creedence Clearwater
Revival,” Kevin recalled. “Creedence was my
influence on him, although him and his friends help
keep me in touch with the music their generation is
listening to and I then might use it when I’m
playing at the nightclub.”
Twenty years a disc jockey, McGrath has seen musical
fads come and go and he wants to see if music wars
are being fought in homes across Inishowen. “There’s
a lot of common ground too and it can be a two way
thing,” he says. “I played a track in the
Fisherman’s Inn in Glengad one night, and a couple
and their two teenage children got up and they all
danced together to it. They’d first heard the song
while on holiday in Spain and it was a shared
experience for them. I’d like to see what music both
generations can relate to.”
