Litter warden starts job soon

AS INISHOWEN'S chronic
litter problem continues, the announcement of a new
litter warden for Inishowen has been welcomed by
local councillors. His appointment means that there
is now a litter warden in every electoral area in
the county.
Moville councillor Marian McDonald played a key part
in the campaign to appoint a litter-warden and her
fellow Fianna Fail Inishowen Electoral Area
representative, Cllr. Rena Donaghey said the
appointment would make a significant difference.
“You see a lot of illegal dumps in Inishowen. At
least with a litter warden in place again you have
some hope that they can find something in these
dumps to trace the person responsible,” said the
Cockhill-based councillor. |

A number of cases of
dumping have taken place in Inishowen in the absence
of a litter warden. Inishowen had been without an
active litter warden for the majority of the last
twelve months and the absence was exploited,
according to Carndonagh-based Cllr Denis McGonagle.

last year people that wanted to dump felt they could

Inishowen again, we have that,” he said.
The new litter warden – whose appointment was at
this months Inishowen Electoral Area meeting by
Donegal Waste Management Officer Suzanne Tinney -
cannot start work too soon.
The Inishowen Independent has been contacted on an
almost weekly basis in recent months by concerned
individuals drawing attention to rubbish dumping in
their area. Last week a farmer in the Bridgend area
contacted our office to report a substantial
roadside tip on a side-road known locally as the
Polic Road, just off the Bridgend–Killea road and
about a mile from Grianan fort. This road has been
targetted on a number of prior occasions by illegal
dumpers.
The farmer, who has land taken in the area, was
scathing in his appraisal of the dumper or dumpers.
"Whoever did this has no respect for nature at all.
There's everything in that pile from a Santa suit to
a hoover to an old mattress. It only causes a couple
of hundred euro to hire a skip and there is easily a
skip full here. Yet someone would rather load it
into a van or a trailer and drive all the way out
here to dump it along the roadside. It's hard to
believe how low some people stoop." |
