Harkin shortlisted for MEP award 26.09.08

NORTH West MEP Marian Harkin has been been short-listed for the prestigious MEP of the Year award. The MEP awards are an annual competition allowing MEPs to vote for their colleagues across ten different categories. Ms Harkin was shortlisted in the category of campaigner of the year having been nominated by a network of voluntary organisations based in Brussels including the European Volunteer Centre. In endorsing Ms Harkin, CEV said: "We fully endorse this nomination due to her outstanding commitment towards the promotion and support of the estimated 100 million volunteers across Europe and in particular her engagement and passion demonstrated for our campaign to have 2011 designated as the European Year on Volunteering'.
The North and West MEP, who was the only Irish MEP shortlisted this year, completed a report on volunteering earlier this year which was adopted, by an overwhelming majority, by the European Parliament. Meanwhile, her written declaration calling on the Commission to announce 2011 as the European Year on Volunteering was also adopted by the Parliament.
Earlier this week, she met Education and Training Commissioner Jan Figel who expressed full support for

the role of volunteering in the EU and for the designation of 2011 as a focus on its value. The awards ceremony will take place at the Brussels Renaissance Hotel on Wednesday, October 8, 2008.
