'Shocking' lack of grief counsellors 03.12.08

GREEN Party local election candidate Sheenagh McMahon has promised to campaign for bereavement counselling in Inishowen, if elected.
Ms McMahon, who is vying for a seat on both Donegal County Council and Buncrana Town Council next year, said the peninsula needed bereavement counsellors, particularly in light of the high level of tragic deaths over the years.
"The fact that there is currently no bereavement counsellors in the Inishowen area is a shocking failure especially in an area which has suffered so many awful tragedies either through suicide, substance abuse, fatal car accidents and fishing tragedies," said Ms McMahon.
"At the moment people from the Inishowen area have to travel to Letterkenny to avail of bereavement counselling which is provided under mental health services."

"I also fail to understand why people have to go through mental health services in order to avail of bereavement services. This is not about mental health, it is about coping with the loss of a loved one - two very different things," she added.
