THE waiting is almost over. This weekend one of the strongest fields ever assembled for a European Senior’s Tour event will battle it out for the Irish Senior’s Open title on the Old Course at Ballyliffin.
The action at Ballyliffin gets underway tomorrow, Wednesday, with the Tournament Pro Am from 1pm. The AIB Pro Am follows on Thursday before the main event begins on Friday.
Welshman Ian Woosnam is making his first appearance at an Irish tournament since he steered Europe to Ryder Cup victory at The K Club in 2006.
Golfing legends Sandy Lyle and Ian Woosnam.
The 1991 Masters winner said: “I always enjoy playing in Ireland. I’ve got lots of friends there and I’m sure it will bring back some great memories for me. Hopefully I will be able to make some more at the Irish Seniors Open. I’m really looking forward to playing in the tournament.”
Sam Torrance enjoys a laugh with Constantino Rocca. Woosnam is part a strong field which also includes two-time major winner Sandy Lyle, Des Smyth, Sam Torrance and defending champion Costantino Rocca of Italy.
Ballyliffin Golf Club General Manager is encouraging the people of Inishowen to come and avail of the opportunity to see top quality golf right here in the peninsula.
If you intend to attend the
Seniors Open you should follow closely the instructions of the course marshals.
Spectators have been advised not to bring cameras or mobile phones onto the course with them. Those following groups of golfers around the course should keep a reasonable distance from the players on the fairways.
