Thieves rob church three
times

GARDAI are believed to
be investigating the theft of a large quantity of
roof tiles from the building site at St Columba’s
Church in Drung.
The chapel, which is currently shrouded in
scaffolding, has been undergoing major refurbishment
work since Easter and the local congregation has
been worshipping in the Community Centre in
Quigley’s Point.
Thieves made off with more than €4,000 worth of new
slates on the weekend of July 5 to July 6. |

However, the thieves
have brazenly returned to the scene of the crime at
least twice since then, stealing the old slates that
had been salvaged from the existing roof and other
building materials. The most recent robbery occurred
in the early hours of last Wednesday morning when a
van was spotted at the |

chapel.
“It’s a sad state of affairs. Nothing is sacred
anymore,” one well-informed local resident told the
Inishowen Independent yesterday.
The robberies are just the latest in a series of
incidents affecting churches in the Iskaheen Parish.
The Church of the Sacred Heart in Muff was targeted
earlier in the year when cash was stolen from the
candelabrums and a number of other robberies have
been attempted on church premises.
The most recent robbery comes just days after the
parish united in celebration for the ordination of
Fr Daniel McFaul. Fr McFaul celebrated Mass at the
Quigley’s Point Community Centre last Saturday
night. Gardaí in Muff and Buncrana were unavailable
