Buncrana hurlers crowned kings of Ulster 09.05.08

BUNCRANA'S U14 hurlers achieved a notable first in the hurling history of the club when they captured an Ulster title at the weekend.
The boys and girls in Tyrone on Saturday won their Féile division in style. The decider took place on the shores of Lough Neagh where a stiff breeze added to the drama. Antrim team Rasharkin went into a halftime lead but Buncrana now had the wind behind them, took full advantage and ran out convincing winners. No small amount of celebrating ensued.
On the way to the final they initially saw off the challenge of Castleblaney's best. This was followed by a comfortable win over Sean Stinson's from North Antrim. Next opponents were County Down's Liatrom Fontenoy's who gave stiffer resistance. Buncrana prevailed by a margin of four points. The victors later proudly held the club's banner at a well-organised parade in Carrickmore.
There was much backroom celebrating with credit going to the management team of Brian Makowski, Seamus Grant and Dónall MacLochlainn. It is also noteworthy that seven squad members were unavailable on the day. The younger players stood tall in substituting for their more experienced colleagues. Congatulations, too, to Brian Stokes, assistant manager who had a First Communion on the same date.
The squad members were: Clare Carter, Tom Clare, Kevin Crawford (capt.), Denver Coyle, Sam Doherty, Conor and Óisín Grant, Ciarán Mc Donough, Dónall and Caoimhín Mac Lochlainn, Michelle Mullan, Jack O' Loughlin, Sarah Parker, and Daniel and Patrick Wilson. Other regular players not available due to illness or to family commitments were John Campbell, Sean Deery, Caolan Doherty, Dermot Doherty, Michael Farrell, Adam Patterson and Aiden Stokes. Thanks are also due to Owen Roe Doherty, Pauline Grant and Bernie Walsh.
