A SITE for the
construction of a Garda HQ for north Inishowen has
been identified in Carndonagh, it's been revealed.
The Office of Public Works (OPW) which is tasked
with the construction and maintenance of Garda
stations, is currently in the process of acquiring
the site and is treating the project as a priority.
The information was revealed this week in the Seanad
following a question by Moville-based Senator
Cecilia Keaveney. It was also revealed that
Inishowen now has a Garda tally of 90 officers
compared to 77 six years ago with a total of 476
officers in Donegal as a whole.
Senator Keaveney said, as a TD, she had raised the issue of a
Carn Garda HQ, a number of times.
"Minister Killeen speaking on behalf of the Minister
for Justice informed the House that Carndonagh is
now one of the priority locations on the Garda
Síochána's building programme," she said.
When the site is acquired the OPW and Garda
authorities will bring forward the necessary
detailed planning for the new station.
Meanwhile, Minister Killeen confirmed that the
personnel strength in the Buncrana Garda district
including Buncrana, Burnfoot, Carndonagh, Clonmany,
Culdaff, Malin, Moville and Muff, was up by 13 since
2002.
Senator Keaveney added: “I welcome the fact that
personnel have increased, we also have a Traffic
Corp and have two new major stations moving on.
"I am still aware of the need to keep our existing
stations upgraded. We, as a community, want to keep
Garda visibility to the core of our community
policing agenda and our Garda deserve the best of
facilities to work from. I look forward to
continuing progress on both issues." |
