Vandals hurl picnic bench into sea 11.11.08

PICNIC benches installed on Moville Green are to be removed for safe-keeping this winter after an ongoing spate of vandalism in the town.
In the latest incident, the vandals ripped a summer seat from the ground and hurled it into the sea. Cllr Marian McDonald said locals were "disgusted" with the continuous damage being done to seafront amenities.
"I just cannot understand the mentality of the young people who are doing this," she said. "It took a lot of hard work from volunteers to put the seats in place. We needed a forklift to do that work so you would wonder about the force these vandals used to pull those seats up." Cllr McDonald said the only option left was to remove the four blue galvanised steel seats A picnic bench hurled into the sea near the Green in Moville.
from the Green until next season.
"The only thing we can do is remove them for the winter and store them in the Council yard until next year. It's a pity because they are still used by people on a dry day in winter. Visitors get fish and chips and take them down to the picnic benches to eat them." The locally-based councillor also hit out at the ongoing damage being done to roof tiles at the local Masonic Hall. She said a protective tin sheet has had to be placed over the roof in a bid to limit the damage. Cllr McDonald said she understood the youngsters involved in an ongoing campaign of vandalism in Moville were juveniles. This left it more difficult for the authorities to secure a conviction for criminal damage.
