Pets are not just for Christmas 20.12.09

FAMILIES in Inishowen have been urged to seriously think if they are planning to buy pets for their children this Christmas.
Senator Cecilia Keaveney said many people did not realise the responsibility associated with pet ownership.
"Coming up to Christmas there are always families who move into pet ownership. Sometimes they are unaware of the implications of those pets and this can cause difficulties in the early part of any New Year," she said.
The Moville-based senator said she had been informed by Agriculture Minister Brendan Smith that new animal health and welfare legislation was in the pipeline to update existing laws.
"Where animals are being compromised we need to have legislation sufficient to act as a deterrent against the abuse of animals. Minister Smith has confirmed that new animal health and welfare legislation will update existing laws to ensure that the welfare of all animals, including non-farm animals, is properly protected and penalties for offenders are increased significantly.
"Pets can be great presents but coming up to Christmas we must think about the
realities of a pet's needs being for the life of the animal and not just for Christmas," she added.ut I know that I have a lot to learn before I start with ideas of my own.”
