A Carndonagh Community School Transition Year student has earned the highest marks in the country in her Junior Cert Technical Graphics examination.
Gleneely teen Tanya Mulhearn didn’t know what to expect when she was called to principal Paul Fiorentini’s office last Wednesday week.
“Mr Fiorentini let on I was called for something bad at the start, before telling me the good news. I knew that I had done well in the exam, but didn’t expect this,” said Tanya, who found out she was the top performing female student in the country at ordinary level Technical Graphics.
She said Technical Graphics was seen as a boy’s subject.

Tanya Mulhern being presented with her All-Ireland medal and certificate by her teacher, Mr. Ambrose McCreanor. “There were definitely more boys than girls in my class. Including me there were only four girls.”
Tanya praised her teacher, Ambrose McCreanor, who was on hand to present her with a certificate from the Engineering Technology Teacher’s Association, in recognition of her achievement.
“He was my teacher for the three years I did that subject. That was a big help because the drawings have to be very precise.
I am in transition year now, because I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do after school,” said the 16 year old, who also got an A in her Junior Cert Art examination. Tanya hopes to pursue both subjects in the future.
