WELCOME to the world, Leagh Sarah Boyce. The first Inishowen baby of the New Year was born at Letterkenny General Hospital at 8.09pm on New Year’s Day. She weighed 7lb 9oz. Leagh Sarah’s parents, Diana Glenn and Kevin Boyce from Meenagorey, Buncrana, were thrilled with their new arrival.
“It’s a great feeling. I’ve had my first baby on the first day of the New Year,” said Diana, speaking from hospital a day after her daughter was born. The new mother had gone into hospital the night before New Year's Eve. Diana was one of six mothers to give birth at Letterkenny General on New Year’s Day.

to Convoy woman Heather Buchanan. That birth was registered at 9.46am on New Year’s Day. At the North West’s other main hospital, Altnagelvin, the first birth of the New Year, also a girl, took place at 1.01am on Thursday morning. There were four births in total at the Waterside hospital’s maternity unit on New Year’s Day, all of them to Northern mothers. Of the babies delivered, three are girls and one is a boy.
Two of the babies were born to mothers from Derry city and the other babies to mothers from County Derry. The first Inishowen birth of 2008, Jamie Ryan Doyle, was also born to a woman from Buncrana.
