GLENGAD-born DJ Michelle Doherty has landed a plum job co-hosting a new alternative music show on RTÉ 2 television. ‘When Under Ether’ is a new six-part series that is broadcast on Tuesday nights and covers all aspects of the alternative music scene with a keen eye on home-grown talent.
“I still can’t quite believe it. I love it. I feel really comfortable working in TV and I’m really glad to be back in a TV studio,” said Doherty of her new gig which debuted last week on RTÉ 2.
Doherty, a successful model and former student of Carn Community School, has extensive TV experience and presented a late night music show, 'The Nightshift', on Channel 6 (now rebranded at 3e). Her producer on that show, Elton Mullally, is now her co-host on 'When Under Ether'.
“I worked seven nights a week on 'The Nightshift' on Channel 6 and loved every minute of it, but this is a bit of a step up,” Doherty said. “One show has already gone out and the reaction has been great. We’re down for a six episode run and then it will be up to the powers that be whether it continues after that.” Model Michelle has landed a coveted RTE music slot.
Michelle was snapped up by Dublin alternative music station Phantom FM when her Channel 6 programme finished last year. She retains a sense of wonder at being paid to play music.
“I regularly have to pinch myself,” she says. “I can’t believe that I have a job that allows me to spend three hours playing music in the studio. It doesn’t really feel like work at all.”
The title 'When Under Ether' is borrowed from a PJ Harvey song. Meanwhile, Michelle’s radio show, 'Finest Worksongs', can be heard weekdays from 10am to 1pm on phantom.ie .
