Keaveney praises her mentor 30.11.09

DONEGAL Senator Cecilia Keaveney has welcomed the allocation of the R&D portfolio to Irish Commissioner-designate and her "mentor" Máire Geoghegan-Quinn.
"I am personally very delighted for Máire Geoghegan-Quinn that she has been nominated as Commissioner for Research and Innovation and that she has been allocated such a heavy-hitting portfolio.”
"I have known Máire since I was first elected and she was like a mentor to me in my early years in Leinster House. She is a very practical and hard working woman and I have every confidence that she will do Ireland proud in the position of Irish Commissioner," said Senator Keaveney.
Senator Keaveney said the Irish and European focus was moving increasingly towards R&D and innovation and described the appointment as "significant" for Ireland's first woman Commissioner.
“Her portfolio includes the 7th Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development, which supports a range of new technologies across a spectrum of economic sectors including food, agriculture, fisheries and information and communication technologies.
“While she will be working on an EU-wide agenda as Commissioner, Ireland can only benefit from her appointment to this significant portfolio," added the Moville-based senator.
