Golf classic to raise
money for several charities
ONE OF Inishowen’s best known golfers - Hugo Boyce -
is to celebrate his 60th birthday by organising a
fund raising golf classic for a number of charities
close to his heart. Mr. Boyce who battled cancer in
his teens and received a kidney transplant 21 years
ago has decided that his 60th birthday would be a
great opportunity to raise funds for St Luke’s
Cancer Hospital, the Donegal Kidney Association and
the Transplant Games. The Transplant Games are a
chance for those who have received organs to give
thanks for their gift and show what can be achieved
through organ donation and Hugo has competed on a
number of occasions for Ireland in both golf and
Petanque. Indeed he won gold for Ireland in the
Transplant Games and won Gold in the sport of
Petanque, just a few hours after Sligo woman Bridie
Nicholson became the first Irish person to win a
Gold in Petanque. |
Hugo defeated opponents
from France, Thailand and Taiwan, before edging out
his Israeli opponent 11-10 in a thrilling final. “It
was a very tough competition, particularly in the
final when my opponent came back to draw at 10-10,”
he said following his win.
Hugo got non-hodgkinsons lymphoma when he was 19 and
spent two years in St Luke’s Hospital from 1969 to
1971 said he was looking forward to his 60th
birthday because he had decided to make an effort to
give something back to help those who continue to
suffer from cancer and kidney disease. The Golf
Classic on May 23 will take place on the old links
at Ballyliffin Golf Club with teams of four €25 |
