GARDAI will be out in
force this weekend in an Easter Bank Holiday
clampdown on road traffic offences. Two people died
in road traffic collisions and six people were
seriously injured on Ireland's roads last Easter. "All
road users are urged to be attentive and so enhance
their own safety and that of other road users," said
a Garda spokesperson. "Over the coming holiday
period, significant Garda resources will be deployed
with the aim of increasing compliance amongst road
users and improving road safety." Figures show a
welcome fall in the number of fatal collisions in
2007 and 2008 with the downward trend continuing
into 2009. The Garda message to drivers over the
Easter Holiday period is:
*Reduce speed.
*Never drink and drive.
*Nominate a non-drinking driver or use buses,
taxis/hackneys.
*Always wear your seatbelt and make sure children
are wearing the appropriate child restraints.
According to the statistics, tiredness also
contributes to road fatalities and injuries. "Those
going on journeys over this Easter holiday weekend
should give themselves plenty of time to complete
their journey safely. Drivers should stop in a safe
place if they feel tired and take a short nap or
break away from the road and have a cup of coffee,"
added the Garda spokesperson. |
