Grace period for Buncrana parking 13.09.10

by Caoimhinn Barr, Inishowen Independent

YOU can park free of charge for the first ten minutes in Buncrana . . . and that’s official.
Following recent meetings, local trader Paul Brogan revealed the news to the Inishowen Independent this week.
“It has been agreed that the first ten minutes of parking in Buncrana will not be charged. Anyone leaving their vehicle for longer than that time must pay the appropriate fee however,” he said.
Welcoming the move, the Food for Thought owner said it was a boost for the town.
“This is great news as it is the first official announcement of a ten-minute grace period. Shoppers must be made aware that they have a short period without the worry of getting a ticket,” he said.
“It is most welcome to know that traffic wardens will allow people a 10-minute free period. This should help make Buncrana a more inviting town for shoppers and if you are only in and out of a premises you will not require a ticket.”
The move clears up a grey area with many shoppers previously unsure if they would receive a grace period for parking or not.
Buncrana town clerk Seamus Canning said that the move was not council policy but that

wardens would take a practical approach. He said shoppers who park in the town will NOT face a fine inside the first ten-minutes.
Buncrana trader Francis Callaghan also welcomed the announcement as a step in the right direction but said ten minutes was not long enough.
“Ten minutes grace for parking is definitely welcome but I would rather see a tightly regulated free period of 30 minutes,” he said.
