Mizen to Malin bid for Down Syndrome 13.05.10

A WELL-known marathon man in his 60s is limbering up for a third and final assault on the gruelling Mizen to Malin route.
John McCann, 61, from Dromore, Co Tyrone, is confident he will set a new record as the only person to complete the 385-mile distance three times in three consecutive years - and certainly the only man, near pension age, to achieve it. This year’s challenge, kicking off on June 10, will be in aid of Down Syndrome associations throughout Ireland.
He aims to run an average of 36 miles a day over eleven days. Down Syndrome charities will fundraise within their own areas, co-inciding their fundraising with John’s run through their towns and villages.
Having completed the challenge in 2008 and 2009, John is all-too familiar with the challenge that lies ahead. His training will reach 100-miles per week on the build-up to the run and he will follow a strict dietary plan before and during the run.
He said: “I just want to use my passion to help others. I love running, and I love the thrill of being the only person to have covered the length of Ireland three times. People comment on my age but I dont feel any different to how I did 20 years ago. Running keeps me feeling young.“
Having raised more than €40,000 during this two previous runs, John hopes that fundraising will be maximised due to his record attempt.

He is also urging well-wishers to support him along the route while local runners are encouraged to join him for a few miles to show their support. If you would like to get involved in any way, call John on 048 82898624.
