Man charged with garda manslaughter 27.05.10

A 24 year old man has been charged with the manslaughter of a young Buncrana garda following a fatal road crash last year.
Martin McDermott of Castlegrove, Raphoe, appeared at Buncrana District Court on Tuesday where he was charged with a number of new offences in relation to the collision that killed Garda Gary McLoughlin on December 13, 2009.
He was charged with the manslaughter of Garda McLoughlin, drink driving, and driving while disqualified on December 13, 2009. He was also charged with driving with no insurance and no licence on the same date.
The 24 year old garda officer, from Fenagh, Co Leitrim, died at Letterkenny General Hospital 24 hours after his patrol car was involved in a collision with another car at Skeoge, Burt, on the main Derry to Letterkenny Road.

The book of evidence was served on the defendant on Tuesday in relation to the dangerous driving causing death and manslaughter charges.
Judge Seamus Hughes remanded the accused in custody to Castlerea Prison where he has remained since he was refused bail at Letterkenny District Court on January 4. He is due to appear again at Letterkenny Circuit Court on June 21.
