Roots Orchestra play Culdaff

THIRTEEN-piece Donegal
band, Mark Black and The Roots Orchestra, will hold
the Inishowen launch of their new album at a concert
in McGrory’s of Culdaff this Saturday night. The
performance will feature Inishowen singer Kathryn
O’Callaghan and The Henry Girls from Malin.
The band’s distinctive style of “rootsy blues” with
strong country influences is proving increasingly
popular with audiences at home and abroad and they
are also lined up to play at the Sugar Club in
Dublin the night before their local gig. |

Band leader Mark Black
says more than two months of hard work went into the
album 'Live at the RCC'. The singer/songwriter and
his 13-piece band appeared at Glastonbury this year
and played a string of packed out gigs at home as
well, including the Earagail Arts Festival last
summer. The band is made up of some of the finest
and most experienced musicians in the country and
includes Ted Ponsonby, who has recorded and played
with Mary Black, EmmyLou Harris and Van Morrison.
The internationally renowned Percy Robinson plays
pedal steel, Michael McGinty is on bass and Seamus
Devenny is on drums and percussion. |
Alongside The Henry
Girls and Kathryn O Callaghan, the band also
features other members of the Inishowen Gospel
Choir. Sean McCarron (Henry McCullough Band) plays
sax and Mark Bradley (Oasis, Ben E King) is on
trumpet with Donal McGuinness - who has played with
the Mirenda Rosenberg Band, and Rare Groove Funk
Orchestra - is on trombone.
First on stage on the night will be another
Inishowen act The Winter Mountain Band, featuring
Martin Smyth and Joe Francis. Tickets are €10 and
