Carndonagh courthouse revamp shelved 08.09.10

A PROMISED major facelift for Carndonagh courthouse has been shelved due to the economic downturn, it's been revealed.
The courthouse has been closed for over two years a promised significant refurbishment that was to include a refit of the court chamber, improved solicitor-client consultation rooms, parking and the installation of an electronic public address system.
But Senator Cecilia Keaveney has been informed by the Courts Service chief executive, Brendan Ryan, that instead of the pledged works "some remedial and maintenance works" will now be undertaken. It is also proposed that the building will reopen in October.
"The court service had plans to refurbish Carndonagh courthouse in a major manner but due to the economic downturn and the reduction in its capital funding it is not now in a position to proceed with this project in the short to medium term," said Senator Keaveney.
"While having the major works completed would be the preferred option in usual times, there is

a wish from those who I have spoken with to have the court in Carndonagh back in operation as soon as possible."
She said locals would welcome the reopening of the court building.
"Sometimes when local facilities close and there is no sign of major works beginning there develops a sense that the location might not reopen. In this case the Courts Service stated intention to resume business next month, will be an important statement.
"I do intend to continue to pursue the major works for this building with the relevant authorities but do look forward to this local service re-commencing, which facilitates local justice delivery," added the Moville-based representative.
