Buncrana to explore CCTV

A CRACKDOWN on anti-social behaviour in Buncrana
could soon see CCTV cameras installed in the town.
Chairperson of the Joint Policing Committee (JPC)
Cllr. Joe Doherty said a feasibility study was set
to take place in the coming weeks to investigate if
CCTV would prove beneficial for Buncrana.
Speaking at a special press conference on Monday
afternoon, held to coincide with National Crime
Prevention and Safety Week, Cllr. Doherty said he
thought closed circuit cameras would enhance safety
in Inishowen’s largest town.
“The Joint Policing Committee is committed to the
provision of CCTV in Buncrana and I think it will
make the town much safer. We have been very
impressed with what we have seen and heard so far
about the effectiveness of the system and we hope to
have it up and running here as soon as possible. I’m
convinced this is something we should do,” he said.
Cllr. Doherty said there was room for improvement in
the ongoing battle against anti-social behaviour in
Buncrana. |

Revealing that the
local Gardai are forced to deal with anti-social
behaviour in the town almost every weekend,
Inspector David Kelly welcomed the move to bring
CCTV to Buncrana.
“In any criminal investigation one of the first
ports of call is CCTV. It would certainly help in
crime detection and prevention in Buncrana and I
hope the feasibility study proves successful,” he
said.
Inspector Kelly added that CCTV would also be a
useful tool for Gardai in dealing with traffic
issues in Buncrana as the flow of vehicles could be
easily monitored.
Town Clerk Seamus Canning said that a CCTV system
was always high on any town’s wish list adding that
it would ‘all come down to costs’. Canning said a
JPC meeting in the next few weeks would focus on the
issue.
The idea for CCTV in Buncrana had earlier been
mooted by Town Councillor Paul Bradley almost two
years ago, back in January 2009. |
