By-election stance 'insulting'  22.09.10

SINN Féin has described as "insulting" Taoiseach Brian Cowen’s comments that the Donegal South West by-election will take place sometime in 2011.
Senator Pearse Doherty, who has taken a High Court action against the Government over its failure to hold the by-election, said the decision over when the election will take place may not be for the Taoiseach to make.
“The Taoiseach’s comments in relation to the Donegal South West by-election are an insult to the people of Donegal. It is now nearly sixteen months since this seat became vacant and the Government has blocked every attempt to hold a by-election up to now," said Senator Doherty.
“This by-election needs to take place at the earliest opportunity rather than whenever suits Brian Cowen or the Government. In the coming Dáil term I and my party intend to step up the pressure on the Taoiseach and the Government to hold each of the outstanding by-elections."
Senator Doherty said his High Court case would proceed next month unless a

“One thing that is for sure is that my case will go ahead unless the writ for the election is moved and passed in the Dáil before October 18.”
