Harkin declares €200K gift to State 16.05.14

INDEPENDENT MEP Marian Harkin has revealed that she has gifted more than €200,000 of her pension entitlements to the State.
Ms Harkin was responding after declarations by other candidates contesting seats in Midlands North West, that they are providing part of their salaries to charities and projects of their choice.
Ms Harkin said she had been asked to declare whether she has done the same.
“On a number of occasions the media has listed pensions foregone by politicians and contributed to the State. I have not been included in these lists in the past but I have no problem in declaring my position," said Ms Harkin.
“Following the crisis situation which led to the arrival of the Troika I decided that because I had a job capable of meeting my financial commitments and an assured salary for five years, I should do my bit for the country.

“Accordingly I decided in 2009 to give my total combined pensions from my 20 years as a school teacher and my membership of the Dáil, to the State.
"This has amounted to over €200,000 and I was one of first politicians to make the decision to forego pensions," her statement concluded.
