Buncrana man pleads guilty to eight-death crash 22.07.14

A BUNCRANA man has pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing the deaths of eight men in a car crash near Clonmany in 2010.
Shaun Kelly of Hill Road, Ballymagan dramatically changed his plea today having previously pleaded not guilty to the charge.
A jury of six men and six women had been sworn in at Letterkenny Circuit Court this morning when the change in plea came. The crash happened at Meenaduff on the main road between Buncrana and Clonmany, on July 11, 2010.
The men who died in the crash were Hugh Friel, 66, Urris, Clonmany; Eamon McDaid, 22, Ballymagan, Buncrana; Mark McLaughlin, 21, Ballinahone, Fahan; Paul Doherty, 19, Ardagh, Ballyliffin; Ciaran Sweeney, 19, Ballyliffin; PJ McLaughlin, 21, Rockstown, Burnfoot; James McEleney, 23, Meenaduff, Clonmany; and Damien McLaughlin, 21, Umricam, Buncrana.
Judge John O'Hagan remanded Mr Kelly (25) on continuing bail until December 9. He also asked the families to prepare victim impact statements for that sitting.
