Outrage as attacks on elderly continue 16.01.13

THERE is outrage in Inishowen tonight as attacks on vulnerable elderly people in isolated parts of the county hit double figures.
Gardaí in Muff and Buncrana are investigating two separate aggravated burglaries which occurred on Tuesday evening. It is believed the incidents are linked and follow unsolicited calls earlier that day to the victims' homes by people purporting to be selling household goods.
In the first incident which occurred at 7.30pm five males called to the home of a man in his 60s at Linsfort, Buncrana.
"The men forced their way into the house and demanded cash, during the course of this burglary the man was assaulted - minor injuries sustained. They then locked the injured man into a shed and fled the scene. The man managed to free himself a short time later and raise the alarm. The raiders took a small amount of cash," said a Garda press spokesman.
"In the second incident five males called to the home of an 80 year old woman at approximately 9pm at Ture, Muff. They demanded cash and assaulted this lady - minor injuries. It is not known at this stage if anything was taken during this incident."
It is believed that a blue-grey or silver Proton car with a Northern Ireland registration plate may have been used in both incidents.
An investigation is underway and Gardaí are appealing for anyone with information to contact the Gardaí at Buncrana 074-9320540, the Garda Confidential Line 1800-666-111 or any Garda Station. Garda Inspector David Murphy said the public's help in similar recent incidents had been helpful.
