Hairdresser Tara's crowning glory 31.03.11

by Linda McGrory

A trainee hairdresser from an Inishowen town is streaks ahead of the competition after scooping a hatful of trophies at a top British show.
Pretty 19-year old Tara Henderson from Buncrana, Co Donegal, impressed the judges at the recent Blackpool International Hairdressing competition, taking first prize in both the senior and junior 'Creative Fantasy' categories.
Tara, who was up against industry professionals, also took the overall title of UK Champion, just pipping her lecturer Susan Cassidy, who took second place in the senior section.
Tara, a student at the North West Regional College in Derry, is no stranger to awards having taken two prizes at the Northern Ireland Hairdressing Association competition in Belfast last year.
“I’m absolutely shocked and delighted. I never thought in a million years that I would win because the standard of the competition in Blackpool was so high,” she beamed.

Tara is the daughter of Helen (nee Murphy) and Trevor Henderson and is sister of Leah, 11. She won the senior prize with a creation called ‘Phantom of the Opera’ and scooped the junior trophy with a design called ‘Living Doll’. The creations are made from real hair, sculpted, coloured and styled into head pieces that attach to the wearer’s head. Meanwhile, her college colleague, Breege Grant, also from Co Donegal, capped a great day out for the Derry college, taking second place in the junior section. Carndonagh's Jackie McColgan placed eighth in the junior event in what was her first competitive outing.
Tara admits she is fanatical about fashion and hopes to work as a TV or model stylist after graduating from college later this year. She is now preparing to compete in the European Cup hairdressing competition at the RDS, Dublin, in May.
Proud lecturer Susan laughed off suggestions she was brave putting herself into the same competition as her students.
“The way I see it, we go forward as a team, so any of us winning is an achievement for all of us,” she said.
Head judge Steven Jones, praised the Derry college for its "world class" performance.
“To win first and second in the senior section was fantastic but to win first and second again out of over 70 competitors in the junior event was just amazing," he said.
"Both staff and students are to be congratulated as it must take such skill and dedication to prepare such amazing fantasy pieces."
