Artists donate works to help local museum 22.11.11

FORTY artists and craftspeople have donated artworks to support Inishowen Maritime Museum where many of them have previously exhibited.
The 'Art of Giving' exhibition and sale is being held to compensate for the loss of the museum's operational funding from the State.
Manager Gemma Havlin said the idea came from a small number of the artists and the invitation was then sent out to other exhibitors.
"We are overwhelmed by the generous response for this fundraising event. To have over 40 artists donating their work is much more than we could ever have hoped for, especially when times are difficult for everyone," she said.

Artist Eileen McLaughlin (Emick) who is among the donors, said: "(The museum) has been an excellent venue for exhibitions and book launches etc., in the past and we have always appreciated the museum’s exceptional hospitality.
"This unique one-off exhibition is a chance for the artists to give something back to the museum. It will be an excellent opportunity to buy a very special gift of art that helps preserve our heritage.“
The museum, at Greencastle Harbour, has recently begun fundraising to compensate for the loss of its grant.
"The museum mainly generates revenue during the summer through admission and sales and in the past we had received an annual budget to help cover all overhead and maintenance costs. Unfortunately the museum lost this assistance and therefore we must raise the lost funding support to enable us to cover the cost of overheads especially during the winter months when there is little or no income," added Ms Havlin.
The donated works range from paintings to pottery and from artists and craftspeople such as Fiona McGee, Des Kemmy, Sharon McDaid, Sean Arrow, Chic-Hens, Nicholas Mosse, Brian Scampton and Donal McPolin.
The launch will performed by maritime artist, John Baird, and will take place at Inishowen Maritime Museum on Friday, December 2 at 8pm. Everyone is welcome.
