Malin musician to play at 9/11 concert 01.09.11

A BOSTON band with strong Inishowen connections has been invited to play at the tenth anniversary NYPD 9/11 concert in New York.
Devri is a rock-trad outfit whose lead singer-guitarist is Declan Houton from Malin.
The band which also comprises a Kerry musician and two Americans, has become well known around the Boston area for their charity work and for previous performances at the 9/11 annual memorial in Manhattan.
The 10th anniversary, however, is the big one and friends and fans are delighted for the popular band. They will join top artists including Irish singer Ronan Tynan on the bill at the Town Hall, Manhattan, on Saturday, September 10.
Declan is from Shantla in Malin and, prior to emigrating, played the Inishowen circuit for years with his brother Leonard.
Declan Houton, second from right, and Devri band mates are looking forward to playing at the NYPD's 9/11 tenth anniversary concert.
He emigrated to Boston in 2000 and has been there ever since - now playing to a new wave of emigrant fans from his recession-hit homeplace.
"Boston is a small city and you're always bumping into someone from Inishowen. There is a big Donegal population in the city, but I would say 90 per cent of them are from Inishowen for some reason.
"The same would go for the Donegal Boston GAA Club here. Most of the boys would be from our area," said Declan in a previous interview.
One Boston-Irish fan who contacted InishowenNews this week described Declan and his colleagues as "unassuming but highly talented guys" who raise much funds for children's cancer care in Boston. Of their historic upcoming gig, she added: "We in the Boston Irish-American community are so proud that we will be represented by these wonderful guys, and Donegal should be also."
