Derry city appoints new chief executive 07.09.11

DERRY City Council has a new chief executive and town clerk. Sharon O'Connor has been appointed to succeed Valerie Watts, who took up a new position in Scotland earlier this year.
Ms O'Connor is currently director of development with Down District Council and is expected to take up her new role in the coming months.
Derry Mayor, Alderman Maurice Devenney welcomed the new appointment.
"Sharon O'Connor has the full support of Council and I am looking forward to working with her in the future."
Ms O Connor is a business and local government professional with over 25 years' experience. She has been Down director of development since 2000. Her non-executive experience includes Arts Council NI and the BBC Broadcasting Council in Northern Ireland.
Prior to working in local government she ran her own successful business and also has an extensive background in the community and voluntary sectors.

A graduate of the University of Ulster with an MA, she also holds a range of professional qualifications in areas such as marketing and personnel.
She was the first local government person to achieve chartered director status and was named the NI Public Sector Director of the Year 2009-2010.
Ms. O'Connor said she looked forward to taking up the position with Derry City Council.
