'First steps' for better broadband 27.09.11

THE first steps have been taken in the effort to connect the Metropolitan Area (broadband) Networks in Buncrana and Carndonagh, according to a local TD.
Deputy Charlie McConalogue held a public meeting in Buncrana on the issue last night attended by local businesses and public sector organisations along with other public representatives.
"It was a productive meeting in that it was about communicating the benefits of the networks to organisations. Niall Beirne of e|net gave us a full overview of the current status of the networks. He highlighted the further need for the local business community to work together to make the case to have the MANs lit."
Deputy Charlie McConalogue.
The FF deputy added: "By working together we can communicate the benefits of the networks and work towards bringing down the costs of the service which are an inhibiting factor at present. The key to this is determining the real level of demand for the service among private and public sector organisations. The meeting last night was a useful first step in this process.
"It is unacceptable that we are now in a situation whereby we have the infrastructure available but we are not in a position to use it. We need to move towards a solution to this. I am heartened by the interest and support shown to date and I believe we can achieve a result through our collective effort.”
