THE BODY of a diver who
died while taking part in a dive off the coast of
Malin Head has been recovered from the sea.
Michael Hanrahan, who was a father of four in his
40s from Dublin, was part of a team who descended
70m below the surface to film the wreckage of a
German U-Boat.
The dive to the U778 vessel took place yesterday
around 26km northwest off Malin Head.
It is understood the divers had just finished a
survey of the wreck and were preparing to make their
way to the surface when the man got into difficulty.
It is thought Mr. Hanrahan, who was a regular
visitor to his Malin Head holiday home, may have had
a seizure.
The other members of the team went to his aid but he
died at the wreck.
Gardai are investigating the incident.
The dive was funded by Derry City Council, which
hopes to raise the WWII submarine to put it on
display in the city to commemorate Derry's role in
the battle of the Atlantic.
Cllr. Shaun Gallagher said the Council was
devastated by the death and expressed his sympathy
to the man's family. He described the deceased man
as a "gentle giant". |
