Fahan marina directors' fury at Earls snub 07.09.07

THE owners of a privately run marina in Fahan have lodged an official complaint with Donegal County Council over its omission from the Flight of the Earls Events Guide 2007.
The Flight of the Earls Events Guide 2007. J.J. McDaid of Lough Swilly Marina, said every mooring location along the Donegal coast was listed on the tourist promotion map except his 200-berth marina, situated only 3km across the water from Rathmullan.
Donegal County Council have not yet issued a statement to local media in relation to the complaint.
"As directors of Lough Swilly Marina, we found it remarkable that the marina, which is in close proximity to such an historic celebration and whose calendar is marked most notably by sailing events, was never contacted in relation to the celebrations," said Mr. McDaid.
He claimed the Council had failed to inform a yachtsman intending to visit for the historic celebrations, of the marina's existence.
"It is an outrage because it is depriving the public, especially those who are not from the local area, of vital information concerning where they might wish to berth."
In 2003, a Deloitte report stated that Lough Swilly Marina should be developed as the flagship marina project for Donegal. Mr. McDaid said the recommendations in the report were later incorporated into the most recent County Development Plan. He said the Council had yet to act on the recommendations.
