Shane to dig deep for Guatemalan poor 13.04.07

Trainee architect Shane Doherty is going back to basics.
The Clonmany man is off to Guatamala in July as a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity NI, where he will help build homes for the poor.
The 23-year old fourth year Architecture student at Queen's University, Belfast, said he wanted to get involved after being told about the organisation's work.

"A tutor at Queens told us about the project so I went and looked it up and thought it was something I'd be interested in doing," he said.
"It will be like going back to basics. Here we have a property boom and everyone's concerned about the price of houses. There, people have very little so it's about the basics of having a roof over your head, not how much it's worth."
Shane is currently on work placement with HMD Architects in Derry. He leaves

for the village of Solola, Guatamala, on July 7th, 2007, along with another classmate and 13 volunteers from around the North.
"The homes we'll be building are simple two-bedroom bungalows with a living room and bathroom. The families who'll get the houses will be helping us with the labour, so we'll get a chance to get to know them as well."
Shane, the son of John Joe and Kathleen Doherty, Tiernasligo, Clonmany, first has to raise £1,500 to fund his flight, expenses and donation to the Guatemalan scheme. He is hopeful the people of Clonmany and Inishowen will get behind him.
His fundraisers are a slave auction and painful leg waxing session at Briney's Bar, Clonmany, on Saturday, April 21st, for which he has enlisted the help of his Urris GAA teammates.  A pub quiz and raffle in the Rusty Nail will also be held on Friday, May 4th. If you would like to contact Shane to find out more or give a donation, his number is 0876346859.
