Inishowen set for recycling price war 20.12.07

AN Inishowen recycling company is to slash 25% off the current cost of kerbside recycling, Cllr. Padráig MacLochlainn has revealed.
The Buncrana-based councillor has been campaigning for a cut in the fee to put out a recycling 'blue' wheelie bin, slating the fact that it currently costs the same as regular household waste.
"I have been vindicated on my stand against recycling charges," said Cllr. MacLochlainn.
"I have been informed that Inishowen Recycling Limited will, from January 7th, provide a kerbside collection recycling service for 25% less than the present cost to householders.
"Indeed, if householders purchase the labels from the provider directly, they will enjoy even better savings," he said.
He slated Donegal County Council's Water and Environment section for not ensuring that private waste collectors

offered a financial incentive to householders to recycle.
"I have challenged the Water and Environment section of Donegal County Council and the private operators to explain how it can be that householders have been charged exactly the same to have their dry recyclables removed as it is for household waste going to landfill," said the Sinn Féin town and county councillor.
"The Water and Environment section stated that they were satisfied that "value for money was being enjoyed by their customers" and a spokesperson for the private operators described me as "naïve" and "disingenuous" for challenging them on their charges".
Meanwhile, Cllr. MacLochlainn said he would be writing to the county manager, Michael McLoone requesting an immediate review of kerbside recycling.
"Another very serious question for the Council and the private operators is - why are recycled materials, collected in Donegal, being transported into the six counties for shipping overseas when there is a material recovery facility or sorting of recycling shed available from Inishowen Recycling Limited in Buncrana?
"This has pushed the cost of the disposal of recycled materials up for the operators and increased the cost to householders," added the councillor.
