Carnival mixes with pride in Rathmullan  17.09.07

INISHOWEN, the rest of Donegal, Ulster and Spain were all represented at the weekend as large crowds converged on Rathmullan for the 400th anniversary of the Flight of the Earls.

With the masts of the majestic Jeanie Johnston on the Swilly enhancing the sense of history, a carnival atmosphere filled the air in the picturesque village.

Johston as billed on the programmes. Rougher than forecast seas had forced the closure of the ship for health and safety reasons. Staff assured the crowds they could step on board on Sunday while the action-packed programme including outdoor gigs, Irish dancing and a colourful carnival parade more than made up for disappointment and grey skies.
