RTE man proud of Donegal roots 02.04.07

RTE environment correspondent, Paul Cunningham was delighted when he was invited to give a keynote speech in Inishowen.
That’s because his father and mother both hail from Donegal and it gave him a chance to catch up with the relatives.
The affable Dublin-born journalist, who is a first cousin of Agriculture Minister Mary Coughlan, was in Redcastle on Thursday to give a keynote address at the Inishowen Energy Fair, organised by Inishowen Rural Development Ltd (IRDL) and Inish Communications.
After delivering his speech ‘The Role of the Media in Addressing the Information Gap on Energy Issues’ Cunningham mingled with the crowd attending workshops and visiting the stands at the event venue, the Carlton Redcastle Hotel.
He told InishowenNews.com he loved getting back to his parents’ native county. “My father is Con Cunningham from Teelin and my mother is Mary Coughlan from Frosses. My mother’s late brother was Cathal Coughlan, father of Minister Mary Coughlan,” he explained.
He also explained how he had visited Derry on occasion with his buddy and
colleague, RTE reporter Tony Connelly, who hails from Culmore.
Meanwhile, IRDL chairperson, Anthony Doogan and Trish Hegarty of Inish Communications said they were delighted with the large turn-out for the event which was part of the European energy project COMPARES.
The project “aims to feed out information on saving money through energy
efficiency and on using renewable energy sources”.
