'Pay and Display' parking for
Buncrana

Buncrana parish
priest, Fr. John Walsh, has been told the Council
will proceed with a compulsory purchase of land
around St. Mary's Hall for a public car park if
agreement can't be reached soon on a lease.
A similar warning has also been issued to the owner
of land zoned for car parking at the rear of Upper
Main Street.

The Council recently
rejected an offer from the owner and said it would
proceed to a Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) of the
zoned land within three weeks, if a satisfactory
agreement cannot be reached.
The CPO warnings come with the introduction of 'Pay
and Display' parking in the seaside town from
September 1.
The Council is close to adopting bye-laws that will
allow for paid parking at more than 20 locations
around the town as well as the appointment of a
traffic warden for which interviewing will begin
shortly. |
The locations where
paid-for parking is to be introduced are Upper Main
Street; Lower Main Street; Lower Main Street (Mill
Brae); Market Square; St. Oran's Road; St. Mary's
Road; Crana Road; Church Street; Ferris Lane; Maginn
Avenue; Cockhill Road; Castle Avenue; St. Columba's
Avenue; Rockfield Terrace. The following car parks
are also to be included: St. Mary's Road car park;
Nailor's Row car park; Eurospar/Europizza car park;
Shore Front car park (opposite Leisure Centre);
Shore Front car park (beside children's playground)
and Stone Jug car park.
Parking will be restricted to a maximum of one hour
on the streets in question and each vehicle must
display a valid parking ticket costing 50c. A fee of
30c an hour will apply to the car parks or €1.20 a
day. A pass, costing €190 a year, will apply to car
parks only. Meanwhile, free parking permits will be
available for disabled drivers.
Wednesday's monthly meeting was told that the
engineer was awaiting a response from the Garda
Commissioner's office regarding the bye-laws.
Councillors also raised concerns about a proposed
€45 annual permit for residents.
Sinn Fein Cllr. Daren Lalor said the residents' fee
should be a one-off as an annual fee amounted to a
personal tax.
Cllr. Paul Bradley of Fine Gael said it was
important the Council got the bye-laws right in the
first instance. But he said one trader had told him
if they didn't implement the paid-for parking soon,
he would be out of business by January.
Town Mayor Cllr. Joe Doherty, Fianna Fail, said the
new system had to be fair. Town Manager Liam Kelly
said the Council would 'draw on best practise from
elsewhere' for Buncrana 'Pay and Display'. He said
he would update the members in June. |
