€137,000 to protect old buildings 13.04.07

Donegal County Council has been granted €137,000 to conserve architecturally important buildings in Inishowen and throughout the county.
The funding is part of the annual round of architectural conservation grants for local authorities allocated by the Department of Heritage and Local Government.
Deputy Cecilia Keaveney said it was important that such culturally important structures were protected from large-scale development.
"It is even more important during periods of sustained economic growth that we seek to protect our built heritage which can come under threat from large-scale development.
"I certainly believe that this will become an area of growing importance in the coming years. This Government's contribution to local authorities does go towards addressing this area of growing concern."
In addition to the €137,000, a grant of €33,000 will be allocated to each local authority towards employing a conservation officer. Donegal already has such an officer.
Meanwhile, Deputy Keaveney said the annual scheme was "an important one for protecting our built heritage".
