Leaflets will be
left in Inishowen hotel rooms and B&Bs this season
asking tourists to save energy during their stay.
The leaflet was launched yesterday by the local
tourism industry as part of a European Energy
project COMPARES led by Inishowen Rural Development
Limited (IRDL).
“This leaflet tells visitors what the tourism and
leisure industry in Inishowen has already been doing
to protect their environment. Now it asks the
visitors to play their part,” said IRDL manager,
Andrew Ward.
“We think people who come here do appreciate
Inishowen’s natural unspoilt beauty and will be
happy to help preserve it.”
The leaflet was formally launched by Mícheál O
hÉanaigh of the County Development Board (CDB), who
said it was a "positive and practical initiative" to
make a real difference to energy consumption in the
area.
COMPARES co-ordinator Trish Hegarty said 10,000
leaflets would be placed in hotel and B&B rooms, as
well as self-catering and other tourism and leisure
outlets across Inishowen. It offers simple tips such
as not to burn lights unnecessarily.
“The tourism industry here is developing and wants
to attract more visitors, but they also want to
develop in a sustainable manner without harming the
environment which brings visitors here in the first
place. The energy saving leaflet is evidence of
their ability to do this.
COMPARES (Communication and Partnership for
Renewable Energy and Energy Saving) is backed by the
Government and the County Development Board. IRDL
leads the Interreg-funded project, with partners in
Sweden, Crete and Germany.
